Description
epa09848518 (16/29) Twenty-six-year-old Ukrainian translator Valerie (R) and her mother Inessa try to get a connection through their Ukrainian telecom roaming during a bus trip taking them to Germany, on a road in Romania, 17 March 2022. Valerie, 26, a translator who lived in the Black Sea port city with her mother Inessa, showed photos of her colleagues from work, who suddenly became volunteers, pitching in to help collect and distribute medication, food, and clothes during the war in Ukraine. “When the shelling started we had to sleep in our shelter,†Valerie says. “We had prepared for it, but hearing the sirens for sure made it all more real. We were trying to keep my nephews and nieces calm and just waiting for it to pass. It was not easyâ€. A Ukrainian telecom company has made 5G roaming free to Ukrainians fleeing the country, but the signal does not work, so Valerie cannot get in touch with her friends back home in Mykolaiv, where the shells continue to rain down.
