We are EPA Images

The European Pressphoto Agency B.V. was founded in 1984 by seven European leading national news agencies motivated by what they saw as a lack of alternatives to the British/American-centric picture services offered at the time.

Originally conceived as a way to exchange pictures from the member agencies’ respective domestic services, the agency also included the world service of former shareholders and other European services and suppliers.

In 2022 the European Pressphoto Agency B.V. passed through a rebrand of its name and is now referred to as EPA Images. Today, EPA Images has eight shareholders, all market leaders in their respective countries: Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA) in Greece, Algemeen Nederlands Persbureau (ANP) in the Netherlands, Agenzia Nazionale Stampa Associata (ANSA) in Italy, Agencia EFE in Spain, KEYSTONE-SDA-ATS AG in Switzerland, Lusa – Agência de Notícias de Portugal in Portugal, Magyar Távirati Iroda (MTI) in Hungary and Polska Agencja Prasowa (pap) in Poland.

In early 2003, EPA made its photo services available to the worldwide market to successfully make the transition to becoming a premier global operation.

Our mission

As a worldwide visual content provider, our business is providing compelling photo and video coverage of breaking news and significant, agenda-setting events from around the world. We deliver a professionally edited, timely selection of highly reliable and competitive pictures and video clips to our clients. Our coverage ranges from general news, politics, and business to sports, arts, culture, and entertainment.

We stand for

Unbiased Coverage, Accurate Information

EPA Images is an independent news organization and its employees, members and collaborators are under the obligation not to allow governments, political parties or any ideological, financial or partisan group to influence their work.

Respecting Intellectual Property, Protecting Our Sources

Ensuring that copyright issues and usage restrictions are respected and that our sources are protected, is key to our creative approach. We protect our copyrights and pursue infringement of our collection of news photography in cooperation with Visual Rights Group, a Belgium-based company specializing in the scanning and legal follow-up of unlicensed publications.

Enhancing Press Freedoms

As a global operation, which also works in areas where there is limited or no freedom of press, our employees or contributors often put themselves at risk to deliver vital, critical coverage. We consider unbiased coverage from those areas a very important contribution to enhancing freedoms of the press and ensuring that human and civil rights are respected. We will always do our utmost to protect our sources against arbitrary and unjustified persecution or violence and we will support them if they come under threat, including not divulging their identities in order to protect them.

Protecting our Employees and Collaborators

We always encourage our employees to prioritize their personal safety and avoid taking unnecessary risks while performing their professional duties for EPA. Wherever necessary, EPA provides protective equipment to its journalists.

An Open, Prejudice-free Work Environment

As a global agency, EPA works with people from many countries of varying ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds. At EPA, we respect and embrace cultural differences and are free from prejudice when dealing with employees, clients, collaborators and suppliers. We strive to provide equal employment opportunities regardless of nationality, gender, age, religion or race. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind or harassment of employees.

Compliance with Laws, Rules & Regulations

At EPA we deal with our employees’ personal data responsibly. We only use the data of our employees, contributors, and customers for the purposes they are collected and do not share any information to third parties unless explicitly required to do so by law.
