epa10325349 A water tap of a donated tank is left dripping after Yemenis filled jerrycans with water from the tank amid a water shortage, on the outskirts of Sana'a, Yemen, 24 November 2022. Yemen has one of the lowest per capita supplies of freshwater in the world because of rising population and limited water resources. Over 17 million people out of Yemen’s 30-million population lack access to safe water and adequate sanitation services in the war-ravaged country, according to UN estimates. It has faced water scarcity for decades, but eight years of war have worsened the situation and inflicted severe damages on water wells, pumping stations and pipelines, exacerbating the arid country’s water crisis. In a country where more than 80 per cent of the population are living on less than two dollars a day, households cannot afford purchasing water, and thus, they fetch water in jerrycans from wells and donated tanks erected by local and international relief agencies.
