epa09829169 (26/27) Head of the Railways Helps organization, Albert Fikacek (2-L) discusses with Polish State Railways (PKP) staff (R) to ensure safe passage for Vika (C), a Ukrainian refugee from Odessa, inside a train on its way to the Czech Republic, somewhere in Poland, 05 March 2022. Vika was one of the few refugees that were able to board the train and continue the journey to the Czech Republic. Volunteers from the Railways Helps organization traveled from the Czech Republic to Ukraine via Poland to bring desperately needed humanitarian supplies and to return with Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their country. But after completing the first part of their mission – the delivery of humanitarian aid – the journey ended in failure as the train returned mostly empty, without refugees, amid the chaos of the human exodus fleeing the violence in Ukraine.
